highest rank is the University of Colorado University of Colorado Boulder (CU-Boulder), which is rated at 142 in 2011/12 QS World Ranking of Universities.
Based in the small town of Boulder, CU-Boulder is part of the University of Colorado system, which also includes the University of Colorado, Denver, and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs - which has an additional medical campus in Aurora.
Somewhat confusingly, the second highest rank of the institution of the State, Colorado State University (based in Fort Collins), is also part of a "system" university. Called the System of the State University of Colorado, which also include Colorado State University-Pueblo and CSU-Global Campus - which offers online courses only.
